Isopropanol, or isopropyl alcohol (IPA), is a widely used industrial cleaner, degreaser, and an active component in antiseptic, disinfectant, and detergent formulations.

Isopropanol has numerous applications. It effectively degreases because it dissolves most oils. It also dissolves alkaloids, gums, natural resins, ethyl cellulose, and many other substances. It acts as a strong preservative and, in high concentrations, has antiseptic properties, preventing the growth of harmful microorganisms and providing disinfectant effects. It can even be used as a mild anesthetic in some cases.
